['sɪvɪl rɪ'lɪdʒən, englisch »bürgerliche Religion«], der von der Bevölkerungsmehrheit getragene Konsens über die gesellschaftlichen »Grundwerte« v. a. in den säkularisierten bürgerlichen Gesellschaften Nordamerikas und Westeuropas. Die Civil Religion besteht im aktiven Einsatz des »mündigen Bürgers« für diese Werte im Rahmen der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Prozesse und erkennt, unabhängig von der individuellen konfessionellen Bindung oder Nichtbindung, deren Ursprung und Berechtigung als über die »innerweltliche« Dimension hinausweisend an (»von Gott gegeben«); als Begriff von J.-J. Rousseau geprägt (Gesellschaftsvertrag); 1967 durch den amerikanischen Soziologen Robert N. Bellah (* 1927) als (umstrittenes) Konzept der Civil Religion zur Beschreibung der Verflechtung von religiöser und säkularer Kultur in den USA neu in die Diskussion gebracht.
